Hi Friends! My blog has taken a backseat for far too long, and I’m breathing new life into it for a very special reason today…. And that reason is the Suit Up for Summer Blog Tour hosted by Raspberry Creek Fabrics! I’ve followed this tour the past several years to get inspiration for using the new summer line of swim fabrics produced by RCF plus some fun ideas for new patterns to try. I’m so thrilled that I was actually able to participate in the tour this year! So without further ado let’s take a look at the fabrics I chose and what I did with them.
For the tour, I was able to pick 2 yards of swim fabric. Which let me tell you, was not easy because there were so many cute prints to choose from! I knew I wanted to do some mixing and matching, so I finally settled on getting 1/2 yard of 4 different fabrics. I got the Mint Citrus Floral, the Vertical Multi Stripe Print, and the Teal Abstract Waves all from the California Dreaming Collection, plus the Fuchsia White Polka Dots from the Basics Collection. When the fabric arrived, I was amazed at how well they all coordinated. I love that with RCF’s collections it is easy to pick fabrics to pair together because you know they’re going to match.
I knew I wanted to make my 3 girls coordinating swim suits plus one for Baby Brother who will be arriving in just a few short weeks! Once I got the fabric, I played around with a few ideas before I settled on how I wanted everything to look. For the girls suits, I decided I wanted to use the same pattern for all of them but use different placement of the fabrics and options from the pattern to create similar, but still unique looks. I also wanted to push myself to try something new, so I decided to use a pattern from one of the tour sponsors. I picked the Hibiscus Swimsuit from Honeydew Kisses. I’d never made anything from this designer before, so I didn’t know quite what to expect. What I got was a thorough and clear pattern for a gorgeous and fun swimsuit. I also happened to find some sew along videos on YouTube where Sharon Aguilar, a fellow blogger, walks you through the whole process of sewing this suit. The videos were super helpful as well! I couldn’t be more pleased with the pattern I used and the looks I was able to achieve using Raspberry Creek swim fabrics.
For the first look, I went with Style A with the wide side ruffles.
The second suit, I used Style B with the neck and leg flounce.
The third suit, I used Style B with a neck flounce and waist ruffle.
I’m not sure I could pick a favorite. Could you??? They each turned out so cute, and my daughters are absolutely in LOVE with them.
For Baby Brother’s suit, I decided to try another new pattern. I’ve owned the High Tide Surf Suit from Peek-a-Boo Patterns for some time now, but have been afraid to tackle it because of the zipper. Well, I really shouldn’t have let fear stop me from trying it earlier. The pattern comes with a video tutorial explaining how to do the zipper. For someone who NEVER does zippers, it was incredibly helpful. So my advice is don’t be afraid of the zipper! I used the Teal Waves fabric and some of my leftover Vertical Stripe fabric for a pop of color. I was really happy with how this suit turned out, especially considering it included snaps and a zipper. Also, this wave design comes in boardshort fabric as well so I’ve decided I need to make my husband a pair of swim trunks to match our boy. My first Father/Son outfit!!!! I’ve already ordered the boardshort fabric and am beyond excited!
I also went ahead and ordered this Pink Tropical Floral print from the same collection so I can make a suit for myself and coordinate with the family as well. I plan to make myself the St. Tropez from Little Lizard King (another tour sponsor and new to me designer) because it looks like it will provide easy access for my nursing baby this summer.
I can just picture the 6 of us in our matching suits at the beach and I am here for it! Call me cheesy, call me crazy, I don’t care. It’s going to be fabulous! You’ll have to watch Instagram for my big reveal this summer.
As part of the tour, Raspberry Creek is offering 15% off all swim if you use the code SWIMTOUR. I can’t recommend this swim fabric enough!
